Patrick
Doherty was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He is the youngest
of five children. His father was descended from an Irish Canadian
family in Hampton, New Brunswick. And his mother is a Cree native
from Peepeekisis Cree Nation in the Qu’Appelle Valley in Saskatchewan.
Painting
since 1990, Patrick does not set out to create ‘aboriginal’
art, but his work has always been influenced by his native heritage.
Throughout his career he has experimented with various media, finding
much satisfaction combining unusual objects with traditional formats.
As
an urban native, Patrick continues to evolve creatively, but has
strong roots in his childhood traditions.
